On the 16th January 2013, one of Westlands Care Home's residents, Mick Jarvis, was diagnosed with lung cancer, and told that he only had a few weeks left to live.
Mick has been at Westlands for a number of years and is an integral part of the community there. He grows vegetables in the garden, helps out around the home, and enjoys chatting with other residents and staff members.
It is no secret that Mick is a huge Manchester United fan, and with this in mind, after hearing the tragic news, staff at Westlands decided to try and arrange a once in a lifetime treat for him. Home Manager Sean McCloskey and his colleagues got in contact with staff at Regal’s head office, and together everyone chipped in to pay for Mick to go and have a private tour of Manchester United’s football ground and stadium.
The trip took place on February 7th and Mick had a great time. He was put on strong pain relief after his diagnosis so he was able to enjoy himself fully. Manager Sean accompanied him on the trip, and was happy to share the special experience with him.
As Mick walked through the tunnel they lit up the score board with his name, and much to his delight he got to meet Sir Alex Ferguson!
Mick’s relatives have expressed how truly grateful they are to staff at Westlands and Regal’s head office for making this dream come true for Mick. Mick really enjoyed himself and has thanked everyone involved.
